WHY VITAMIN D ?
Most of our vitamin D comes from sunlight. When we go outside vitamin D is made under our skin, with the amount produced dependent on how strong the sunlight is.
However in the UK where there can be limited sunshine, especially in winter, vitamin D deficiency can occur.
With children from the age of 1 year all the way up to adults needing 10 micro- grams of vitamin D per day, and babies up to the age of 1 year need 8.5 to 10 micro- grams of vitamin D per day – it is important to ensure we all get the right amount of vitamin D.
Plus, making sure we have enough vitamin D helps with lots, including:
- Helping control the amount of calcium we absorb, making it important for maintaining strong bones.
- Plays a role in maintaining normal teeth and muscle function.
- Reduces the risk of falling associated with postural instability and muscle weakness.
- Contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and the inflammatory response.
- Needed for normal growth and development of bones in children as well as the normal functioning of their immune system.
